Henry kissed Faith on the forehead, looked into her eyes, then gave her a quick peck on the cheek. “You think we have time for breakfast before I get out of here? Maybe just some toast and coffee?”

“Maybe.” Faith stood on her tiptoes and nibbled his ear. “And maybe we have time for a quick something else. Hmm?”

“Shit!” a woman’s voice cried out from the foyer, just as they heard a vase crash onto the hardwood floor.

“Maybe not.” Henry sighed, then shrugged his shoulders and gave a slight chuckle.

“Hope, is that you?” It was a stupid question since Faith had recognized her sister’s voice, but an automatic one. She also wanted to ask if it was the $650 white porcelain vase that stood on the end table by the door that had just shattered, or the simple vase holding the flowers that Henry had brought home the night before, but decided against it. She’d find out as soon as she walked out of the bedroom anyway.

“Yeah, it’s me!” Hope appeared in the bedroom doorway, her eyes were glazed and stance unsteady—sure signs she was high on something. There was no trace of alcohol on her breath. “I’m sorry about that,” Faith whispered in his ear.

“Hey, Hope, why don’t you go grab some sleep in the guest room and I’ll wake you up later so we can talk,” she said, turning to her sister, who was bobbing her head up and down to music only she could hear.

“Yeah, okay.” Hope started shuffling off, but then slowly turned around. “Hey, is there anything to eat? I’m starved.”

Henry grinned. “Your sister was just getting ready to fix us some breakfast, weren’t you baby?”

“Yeah, just toast and coffee, though,” Faith grumbled as she grabbed her brown terry cloth robe from a hook on the bedroom door.

“Yeah, I could use some toast and coffee,” Hope said as she trailed behind Faith into the kitchen. “More toast than coffee, though.”

“Henry’s being a sweetheart, but I know he’s pissed,” Faith said when they were out of earshot. “Why didn’t you ring the doorbell instead of just walking in like that? We could have been in the middle of doing it on the living room couch or something. Or Henry could have been walking around in his drawers.”

Hope shrugged. “I seen men in their drawers before, you know.”

“Well, I ain’t planning on you seeing my man in his drawers,”

Faith snapped as she bustled around the kitchen, opening and shutting cabinet doors for no reason, trying to calm herself down. She had been so sure
